You and I and the Truth

When someone says "there's not a lot we can do" - what I hear is "the powerful and the able are doing an awful lot

to not save us" and what I believe is that this is a weak excuse for basic, mindless, 'main characters' to lean into blaming-shifting while

evading a responsibility to be more than fantasists and nihilists and cynics.

You and I and the Truth

It is so easy to be a fantasist or nihilist or cynic, because it has always been so damn comforting to embrace fictions and delusions and the worst. After all,

when the alternative is the truth, lies are the compelling alternative.

*

Case in point: punching down.

The fantasist will tell you a story. Spun of whole cloth. Or wrapped like a precious diaphanous bow around a grain of plausible reality. A narrative that satisfies a hunger to be in on 'the secret'.

For all it takes to sell a tall-tale is a fabulist.

The nihilist will tell you a theory. Scattershot with absurd jargon. Or code-switches that wink and spit. Or thought terminating cliches that gush from pretensions of wit and wisdom. An ideology of permission.

For all it takes to sanction an annihilation is a justification.

The cynic will tell you a belief. Soaked through like a pig pickled in vinegar. Or as unrelentingly brittle as a desiccated hide. An opinion that there is no fairer judge of the truth - than a feeling.

For all it takes to see what isn't there is a false witness.

*

You see: punching down is so easy because it has always been so damn comforting to defend our unreasonable intolerance. After all,

when the alternative is standing with the punched down, the compelling alternative is not only tempting, but shameless.

*

Isn't this why we exhaust each other with 'deep conversations' and 'sweeping investigations' and 'insider revelations'?

To say

defying a call to disavow tall-tales, sanctioned annihilation, and false testimony can be honestly explained! - because fictions and delusions and the worst are so credible! - because fabulists, justifiers, and false witnesses are so appealing! - because look here -

this is plainly normal - everybody who is lead into this temptation is clearly ordinary - how everything about this blithe acceptance of obvious nonsense is understandable and thoroughly unexceptional - ?

Which is to say,

aren't 'deep conversations' and 'sweeping investigations' and 'insider revelations' the sacrosanct fuel by which we 'prove' that standing with the punched down is febrile? whereas the shameless alternative is not only vigorous but muscular and not only muscular but fearless and not only fearless but heroic - ?

*

You see: to be a fantasist or nihilist or cynic demands nothing more ingenious than a lie that is an imposter of the truth and a liar who is an imposter of confidence.

For all it takes for the powerful and the able to do an awful lot to not save us is

us, hearing fantasists and nihilists and cynics declare their victorious right to rule us all, as if basic, mindless, 'main characters' are not only our own, but our only rescue and salvation.

More

You paint the punched down with strokes like a brush clutched between the toes of an elephant.

Without apology.

As if this rendering of 'reality' and 'the truth' is acceptable to the alternative.

And necessary.

Because the alternative is the truth,

the answer to your prayers is not.

*

When a local bakery owner and a leader of a free country say "there's not a lot we can do" -

when an immigration attorney and an entertainer and an elected representative of the people and a corporate citizen say "there's not a lot we can do" -

when you say "there's not a lot we can do" -

do you hear yourself

leaning into self-censorship or blame-shifting or sugar-coating or numb distractions or self-dealing or entitlement, etc.?

*

When the sacrosanct 'fuel' by which basic, mindless, 'main characters' are 'proven' to be 'vigorous' and 'muscular' and 'heroic'

is

fiction and delusion and the worst -

and

fiction and delusion and the worst are doing an awful lot to not lift all boats -

an awful lot to prioritize fabulists, justifiers, and false witnesses as if tall-tales, sanctioned annihilation, and false testimony are precious realities -

an awful lot to not stand with the punched down -

because stories and narratives! because theories and ideologies! because beliefs and opinions! -

when will the alternative to fantasists and nihilists and cynics be you and I and the truth?

  1. I don’t believe that inaction is the best policy when bad things are happening around you. At the very least, no matter how big or how small the action is, it’s imperative that you try to do good. Yes, there will be consequences to it, but those are far less than the consequences of doing nothing

  2. Sometimes things go wrong to help us remember that real living is putting the good work into helping others instead of just doing nothing to survive

  4. It’s a tale as old as time, those that have the capacity to effect change often are the ones that choose not to. They are our leaders in terms of fame, power, and wealth but I must ask what makes them a leader other than a body count, a title, or a number? It certainly is not because they demonstrate compassion, moral obligation, or a desire to be honest. No, these people lack vision, hope, and a caring nature for the well-being of others around them. They are illegitimate based on their lack of honesty, negativity, and selfish nature. So why idolize them? What does it say about our society when the tendency to idolize these individuals and place emphasis on their personal narratives and thoughts instead of the collective or changes that are needed. Are they not ill-equipped to address societal challenges and bring about change if for no other reason than they are the least likely to want to rescue or bring on salvation for anyone but themselves? The more that you give them power, the more you give them airtime, and the more you buy into their game, the more passive and apathetic you become, neglecting the individual and collective responsibility to each other to bring about real change and action that benefits each other. In the end, the apathy and passivity that you should demonstrate is towards these people who have not done a single meaningful thing for all of us.

  5. I’m a comedian… It’s always been easier to punch up than down as there is more material there. But that’s not why I do it. I do it because frankly the rich, powerful, and famous are !@#holes who deserve every punch they get. No matter how stupid the poor are, they don’t deserve to get their !@#$ punched, their life already sucks. So, I just don’t do it. Also, I don’t want any poorer on poor action – it just makes the man that much !@#$ing wealthier.

  6. The power of pure imagination and creativity in storytelling that can be relatable to human emotion and real-world experiences leads to more immersive and emotionally engaging narratives which is how you choose to get sucked into doing such harmful and reprehensible things to others; or simply doing nothing. Alas, life is not some fantasy story for the rich and powerful, it’s reality for all the rest of us – so let’s do something with it rather than just be a side piece to them.

  7. Confronting difficult truths often disrupts one’s perspective of the world. Embracing these truths necessitates acknowledging uncertainty and an absence of straightforward paths to understanding, which can be unsettling. Living in accordance with these truths requires self-awareness, critical thinking, and a willingness to change, all of which demand effort and dedication. This journey is not brief; it is a lifelong process that will not result in public accolades, financial gain, or widespread recognition. However, it is a worthwhile endeavor, as ultimately, it contributes to making the world a better place for everyone, rather than just oneself.

  8. When one hears the truth, real not fake, false gods cease to look godly, for the fury, deceit, and hate disappear – conquered by the fear that the truth will set free the thoughts that will destroy the webs and conjured images of the fantasy that hold you enthralled. They curse this moment until all their faces are pale with the horror that they now lack control. No matter how hard they try to raise their voice, they are left as a low mutter, drowned out by the afar off roll of thunder that deepens into the wonderful peals echoing the coming of the truth.

Soil the blocks and tropes of well-known, treasured myths and you would think that the nihilist, the cynic, and the fantasist were watching someone dip a crucifix in urine, cover it with wasps, and throw it into a port-a-potty. That at least would be real, and not the poison spewed by these three.

  10. Rich Tourists crash a private jet within the rain forest, wallets open, governments divert the military for search and rescue. The rain forest is chopped down, laid bare as no tree will be left unturned. People lament the lost, the people who had money, were leading a company, or wrote a book. It’s a crying shame; how can the world go on…
One thousand people who help the poor, do jobs no one wants, and live good lives get deported to horrible prisons for the crime of entering a country legally through an executive order that was countermanded by another executive order. No mercy for these criminals, borders need to be tightened, and we need to spend more money to build a wall.
Yeah, that’s the world we live in…

Why is that a bored, middle-class, creative housewife who is clearly college educated with a meaningless degree living a life devoid of any greater purpose than to bring down others feels the need to share her opinion? You co-opt our language, ideas, and thoughts and then proceed to deconstruct it into something grotesque. Then through your cynicism, vulgarity, and nihilism put it back together into Frankenstein designed to shock and outrage us while disheartening the rest from living their best life. You should hang your head in shame for the mockery and defilement you practice on what we hold to be true. But of course, that’s the reason why you are nothing more than a college educated housewife.

Most people don’t realize that they have two strikes against them already, one is their wealth, the other is their genetics. So why not go out swinging as there are no walks in life.

Nothing can be left for us to fight for when people choose to sit instead of stand for what is right and true.

The place where you make your stand never matters, only that you took it and realize that in the end, no matter what happens, you still did it.

  16. The world is full of bad things that happen daily. How you respond to them though defines the quality of others and your life. You can do what they do and choose to sit in perpetual sadness, lacking any inertia as the gravity of apathy immobilizes you. Or you can choose to rise, experience the pain, and take a stand where you can so that you and others can live again

Simply engaging in these activities without a genuine commitment to change is performative allyship and tokenism. For those proud of the sweeping investigations and insider revelations that come with yours or theirs being in power, you seem to forget that these are meaningless when susceptible to bias or sensationalism which misrepresents the truth and often causes harm. Lies put good individuals at risk and destroy the foundation of institutions that actually do good. So, why do they do it, well there are many reasons but maybe the easiest three is to erode solidarity of the masses, destroy empathy for others not like you, and emasculate the truth to have no power. Yeah, that’s what the rest of you have signed up for.

  21. I am faith based which is nothing more than saying that I intend to slip my religious based thoughts past you. Isn’t that how we always start to take over things with our religion. First, depriving you of your choice, then forcing our views on you, and then finally making you believe that we are nothing more than faithful people while we plow, take, and steal everything you have?

Please don’t confuse me or my kind as those who cling to hope. I enjoy describing how messed things up but have no desire to discuss how things should be. I am firmly grounded, not the fantasy that many who don’t follow here enjoy. I have no interest in fixing these issues as most of the fixes that the rest of you are pursuing are not fixes and many of you long ago dismissed my ideas as being too far. Most of you feel you have a solution, you elect someone to implement that solution, and then finally learn that you are part of the problem and then decide to try the same thing over again with a new elected official. That’s why I have landed where I am today which is to say, “Fuck Hope.”
Some of you will say I am not happy; that’s farthest from the truth. I am jovial with a great marriage, and close and loving friends and family. My career has turned out better than one could have hoped when I left school and it continues to expand. I’m actually an optimist but my skepticism of those things outside my bubble is borne of reality. You all might think I am angry, but what it really is sympathetic contempt for fantasy. I view all of you with wonder and humor, wondering what you will do next. I do hope for the destruction of all of us but that’s not to say I am a cynic – no real cynics are the ones who make you believe everything will be all right if you just do x or y.
If by some chance all of you folks manage to straighten things out and start making things better, please don’t include me. I don’t wish to be part of something that strips away the freedom and truth because that in the end is part of all human’s final solutions.
Please keep up the fight AM, you are truly amazing, and I enjoy reading what you write and how you punch even – it’s something so few know how to do.
